10/01/11 - VYCOM Introduces The Designboard Collection That Features Trend-Setting Colors & Textures
Vycom announces the launch of its new Designboard Collection, featuring a designer line of rich colors and textures. These trend-setting looks feature the toughness of HDPE with the brilliance of metal or natural look of wood. However unlike metal and wood, they will not rust, rot, corrode, delaminate or splinter over time. Perfect for indoor or outdoor cabinetry and displays, POP displays, exhibits, signage and more, Vycom Designboard has excellent stiffness and UV resistance.

With the Designboard Collection, it is possible to create luxurious design-quality displays and cabinetry with a material that is maintenance-free, resists scratches, mold and mildew and never needs painting. It's also non-porous and easy to work with using standard woodworking machinery and tools. It is available in sizes of 3/8", ¾" and 1".

The collection features standard colors of Stainless, Bronze, Nickel, Java and Shale in various textures to add to their visual appeal. Additional dramatic colors and textures are available by special order, including Sequoia, Concrete, Onyx, Storm and Black.
05/02/11 - Sign Shop Owners Find Advantages with Vycom's Celtec
Vycom's Celtec family of graphic and display materials is designed with a unique combination of features that makes them ideal for digital and screen printing, signage, display advertising, exhibits, POP, and more.

Vycom's Celtec family is available in a variety of sizes, including oversized sheets, as well as a colors. Celtec is lightweight, easy to fabricate, paint or laminate and has excellent fastening characteristics. It also has superior UV performance, digital printability, precise diecut ability, and can be thermoformed.

For one Celtec Ultra White print job comprised of a series of backdrop display panels, the theme was a retro coffee shop complete with model close ups in black and white. On-press expert Dene Taylor, Ph.D., of SPF-Inc. in New Hope, PA, was brought in for quality assurance. "Black and white can be challenging, but we were printing on Vycom's Ultra White outdoor signage material," he said. "It has an appealing high sheen surface, much smoother than common expanded PVC grades. The large panel images had great contrast and the look of classic photography."

Workability is key, according to sign firm owner Andy Dubbs of Metal Logos and More in Ralston, NE. "Celtec materials hold paint extremely well and cut and rout like butter," he said. "They truly perform for my retail and commercial clients, from retail and auto shops to indoor hockey rinks. I use Matthews Paints, which covers Celtec's edges extremely well and the final result is always highly professional." Dubbs likes the material's ability to easily glue, and the ease that he can add layers and rout the material with his in-house CNC router to achieve a 3D look.

As far the harsh elements outdoors, Celtec Ultra White is ideal for outdoor retail signage. It can be digitally and screen printed and has superior UV performance, a high gloss finish, and no pretreatment is needed. It can also be thermoformed and has excellent impact properties.

GWP Advertising of Montclair, NJ hired Darin Dubrow, owner of Sign Me Up in nearby Livingston to create an outdoor sign sporting their new logo. "GWP is a very hip, forward thinking agency and wanted their new logo and company sign to reflect their style," said Dubrow. "I was able to achieve intricate, curved retro lettering with a hand router using the Celtec Ultra White, which also accepted the metallic-look paint very nicely."

Celtec PVC materials are lead and heavy metal free, which allows them to optimize performance while being better for the environment. Vycom is committed to sustainable methods of operations and manufacturing at all levels. Vycom manufactures all materials in the USA, with short lead times for customizations.

05/02/11 - Vycom's Celtec Expanded PVC Used for New Wedding Trend Item
A recent wedding trend has created a unique application for Vycom's Celtec expanded PVC product, long recognized in printing circles for its durability and printable surface. According to Tom Van Beuekom, President/Owner of Crown Plastics, Plymouth, MN, the company has found an enterprising business using the material for multi-tiered cupcake trees.

Tom designed the display trees in various sizes for weddings, baby showers, holidays and other occasions as a more affordable option to an acrylic line he created a few years ago. It turned into a mail order business for Crown Plastics, to the extent that the Crystal Palace cupcake trees have their own website at http://www.crystalpalacecupcaketree.com.

"It all started when a bride requested a cupcake tree," said Van Beusekom, "and we were able to customize an elegant, backlit stand that holds the cake on top with tiered cupcakes below. It just took off from there as word spread." Van Beusekom explained that the ease with which Celtec can be fabricated allows treatments such as rounded shapes and scalloped edges. It also provided an easy to clean surface that is suitable for incidental food contact. "Its a very cost effective option, since the lightweight nature of the product and its ability to fold flat makes it inexpensive to ship," he noted.

The versatility of cupcakes have made them a fun and popular item at weddings and other events, but the trees can also be used for other freestanding items like flowers, candies, champagne glasses and appetizers. They are available in four sizes of 3-6 tiers with an optional Lazy Susan base.

Because Celtec is not only durable, but highly printable, one may wonder if the cupcake trees will get graphic treatments in the near future. "Don't count anything out," said Van Beusekom, "I'm sure that's coming next."

11/11/10 - VYCOM Earth Boxes Used at World Trade Center Memorial Site
When you supervise one of the world's highest profile construction projects, every detail is important, especially when it impacts the site's longevity and beauty. Kevin Smith, project manager for Navillus Contracting based in Long Island City, NY, has been supervising site work at the memorial section of the World Trade Center. One item on the agenda was the placement of earth boxes that will provide separation between structural and landscape soil as well as containment for the site's 500 trees. Smith specified the earth boxes himself because he wanted a material that was easy to work with and that would not rot under constant moisture. He found Vycom's Hitec HDPE to be the best for the job.

"The trees have an irrigation system that will regularly pump water into the earth boxes, which are set into concrete surrounds," said Smith. "We needed sturdy, moisture-resistant earth boxes to maintain all of the trees over the long-term." He explained that the easily-fabricated Hitec earth box units were designed with openings and angled slats for drainage and tree root expansion and extraction, if a tree should die. "That saves the concrete surrounds from having to be broken up and replaced and the structural soil from being compromised--if a tree dies, they can grind and remove roots through the openings," he said.

The Black Hitec HDPE panels being utilized on the World Trade Center Memorial Site are manufactured with a percentage of recycled material. The recycling of scrap in the factory is cost effective, better for the environment, and keeps material out of the landfill.

Hitec HDPE is part of Vycom's Corrtec family of products, with excellent impact strength, stiffness, scratch and chemical resistance and low moisture absorption. It is easy to fabricate and replaces wood or metal in many applications. Hitec HDPE is available in oversized sheets and several color options and thicknesses.

AIN Plastics of Yonkers, New York is the supplier for Navillus Contracting's total of 2,000 Hitec 4X8 panels. AIN Branch Manager John Colleluori has been working with Navillus to facilitate material supply as development work at the memorial section of World Trade Center continues. Founded in 1970, AIN Plastics is a division of ThyssenKrupp Materials NA. Another ThyssenKrupp company is supplying elevators and escalators to the 1,776 ft. tall Freedom Tower at World Trade 1.

The 500 trees, which look like a virtual forest in the site's architectural renderings, are an integral part of the landscape design in the World Trade's Memorial area, as the greenery will add natural serenity and beauty to the Memorial. The trees will surround the two fountain pools that mark the spot of the twin towers, which will feature water cascading over 30 ft. black stone walls into pools below. Bronze plaques around the pool will honor those who passed on 9/11.

Navillus Contracting will complete the site work for the WTC Memorial section in May 2011 and it will be dedicated on Sept 11, 2011.
